Shido Itsuka (いつ どう, Itsuka Shidō?) is the protagonist of Date A Live. Gifted with a mysterious power that allows him to seal the powers of a Spirit in his body with a kiss, Shido works with the Ratatoskr organization to peacefully resolve the issue of Spirits by dating and making them fall in love.

Summary

Adopted into the Itsuka family household at a very young age, Shido has been living a fairly average normal life until recently. At the start of his new high school year as a 2nd-year student, he accidentally stumbles into a new world unknown to him or to the public. Discovering the real reason behind the Spacequakes and the conflict between the AST and the Spirits; forcefully or voluntarily, Shido was brought into the secret organization known as Ratatoskr that his little sister commands. With the only explanation from her being that only he can save the Spirits by dating them, Shido reluctantly joins due to his nature to help and save people in need. Going about with his normal life and rescuing Spirits is one thing, but with each new encounter and new Spirits to save, there is always some type of new hardship on Shido's mental health since he lacks experience dealing with the opposite gender. In his quest to make the Spirits fall in love, he comes to learn how their history is inextricably tied to his own, leading him into a conflict with Deus Ex Machina Industries, led by the evil Isaac Westcott.

Appearance

Shido has the looks of a handsome young man in high school. He has straight blue hair and bands down to his neck and amber-brown eyes. During the times when he borrows another Spirit's power, the color of his eyes turns into a more golden shade. He is often seen wearing the male Raizen High School uniform during his everyday life circumstances.

During the events of Miku Lily, Shido had to cross-dress as a girl to interact with Miku, thereby disguising himself as his alternate identity, Shiori Itsuka (五河いつか 士織しおり?). During that time, he was seen with long blue hair, and he wore the standard female Raizen High School uniform. He also wore a flower hair clip as a hair accessory. He is later able to become physically female via <Haniel>.

Personality

Shido is an average young man who originally had no interest in the opposite gender until he was forced to be by his little sister. He is now compelled to deal with females on a constant basis, something that he wasn't used to before.

Kotori described another interesting part of Shido's personality. As a result of being abandoned by his birth mother, Shido has become unusually sensitive to other people's despair. It is this empathizing nature that makes him regarded as the best person to handle the Spirits.

Shido is also a very kindhearted person who can sympathize with others. These traits are what caused most of the Spirits to fall in love with him, as the thing they seem to lack most of all has always been a person who could accept and understand them. Even Miku, who treated everyone like puppets, ended up changing her worldview because of him.

Shido also possesses a strong will and a genuine willingness to forgive others. He will press on to save the Spirits despite the great personal risk to himself. When responding to Natsumi's comment about the trouble she caused him, he compares her actions to what he went through during all of his past attempts to help Spirits and can only call her actions childish pranks: this is a girl who nearly ruined his reputation and erased all his friends and would've then erased him had she succeeded.

Shido had a chuunibyou phase in middle school, where he played guitar, wrote stories and poems, and came up with anime-like moves. He is currently extremely embarrassed about these hobbies and tries to dispose of all evidence, only for Kotori to salvage them as blackmail for completing his training.

During his Reiryoku high, Shido becomes much more confident and flirtatious. He feels compelled to woo every girl in sight (even Ellen despite her hostility) and is unfazed by the intimacy that would normally fluster him. He even becomes frivolous enough to use the powers he has sealed for fun. However, once his Reiryoku went out of control, he became a mindless monster who could only gradually regain his sentience through the Spirits' kisses reopening their Paths.

Despite his determination to save the Spirits, Shido's conviction has been shown to falter more than once. When he first learned of Kurumi's real, malicious nature, Shido was left scared and unsure of how to approach her, having become actively wary of the "Worst Spirit". Similarly, after Mukuro outright rejected him and dismissed his beliefs as hypocrisy during their first conversation, Shido began to question if sealing the Spirits' powers may actually be a mistake; as doing so leaves them much weaker and more vulnerable to getting captured by DEM. During times like these, Shido has often needed the advice and emotional support of those closest to him to renew his resolve.

History

Background

30 years ago, Shinji Takamiya (崇宮たかみや 真士しんじ?) encountered the First Spirit during a Spacequake and brought her home, where he lived with his little sister Mana. After a day of media exposure, the Spirit learned how to talk, and explained what she knew about her birth. Deciding to make her part of their family, Shinji named her Mio Takamiya based on the 30th day of the month when they first met. Shinji and Mio gradually fall in love, with the boy winning her treasured teddy bear from a crane game and later taking her on a date to the beach.

However, their happiness would come to an end when DEM learned of Mio's whereabouts. Shinji struggled to keep Mio out of their hands, getting help from Woodman, but they were confronted by Westcott, who claimed to have captured Mana and offered to exchange her for Mio. Mio started to accept, but Shinji refused to trust Westcott and tried to escape, leading to Westcott shooting him. Shinji died from his injuries, leaving Mio devastated that her powers could not directly bring him back. By absorbing Shinji's corpse into her own body, Mio planned on reconstructing Shinji as well as bestowing him her powers to ensure that he could become her eternal lover. However, due to the fact that the human body is too frail to withstand Spirit powers, Mio only initially granted Shido one power: the power to gradually seal other powers into his body.

Shortly after he was born, Shido was abandoned by Mio and adopted into the Itsuka household at a young age. Despite not having clear memories of his mother, her disappearance left him in a near-suicidal depression for about a year. Five years ago, an incident caused Kotori to become a Spirit due to a misunderstanding on her part and was tricked into becoming one, but neither of them can remember anything about that incident until Kotori personally used her powers again five years later, which awakened those memories in both of them again. Around this time period, Ratatoskr discovered that Shido held the ability to seal the powers of Spirits.

Origami being comforted by Shido

Before the incident, Shido seems to have met Origami, who lived in the same district, since she claimed to know him when they first met at the school while Shido couldn't recall anything about their meeting. During the events of Tobiichi Devil, it is later revealed that this is because Origami met the future Shido, who traveled back five years to the past using Kurumi's <Yud Bet> and eventually shrunk his body with Natsumi's power to find out the reason for Origami's Inversion. After saving the 11-year-old Origami from being crushed by a part of a burning building, Shido comforts Origami, who was on the verge of despair. He told her that she could give anything to him, as long as she doesn't feel despair. Origami replied that she would give him her tears, smile, happiness, enjoyment, and everything except her anger towards the Spirit who killed her parents.

Powers and Abilities

Sealing

Shido has the mysterious and unique ability to seal the powers of the Spirits into his body, which was first discovered by Ratatoskr sometime in the past when Kotori was turned into a Spirit. This power was bestowed onto him by the First Spirit, Mio Takamiya. Mio gave Shido the ability to absorb more power in order to gradually bestow her own abilities onto him, with each other Spirit acting as intermediary vessels to facilitate the transfer.

In order to use his ability to seal a Spirit’s power, the Spirit in question must meet certain conditions or requirements. Those conditions or requirements are that the Spirit in question must show affection, trust, closeness, and intimacy towards Shido. Once these conditions of love are high enough between Shido and the Spirit, he can seal their power by kissing them on the lips, creating a path of Reiryoku between them. By the time of Volume 19, Shido has sealed the powers of all ten Spirits, giving him full access to each of their Angels.

Due to the sheer amount of Reiryoku sealed inside of his body, Shido has been shown to possess a level of protection or outright immunity towards the abilities of other Spirits. These powers include being able to withstand Kurumi's City of Devouring Time as well as being completely unaffected by Miku's Solo. He was also able to resist Inverse Nia's future describing ability, but needed to actively exert the power of the Angels when doing so.

If the Spirits' emotions become unstable enough, their powers will begin to return to them and leave Shido. This flaw means that he will have to seal them again should their powers fully return to them, but usually this only results in the Spirits temporarily regaining portions of their original power. However, as shown in the cases of Kotori, and much later on Tohka, it is possible for the Spirits to take back their full powers without the need to become emotionally unstable. Kotori seems to be capable of choosing exactly how much of her powers she takes back from him at any given time and so far most of the Spirits have managed to figure out how to form partial Astral Dresses, with varying results.

After the disappearance of Mio's Sephira Crystal, Kotori states that it is unknown if Shido still retains the ability to seal the power of the Spirits.

Angel Manifestation

Shido can also “borrow” the power of a Spirit he has sealed, which explains the nature of his regenerative abilities. The borrowing works primarily as if a Spirit has manifested an Angel. While he has tapped into the powers of many Angels, <Sandalphon>, <Haniel>, <Michael>, <Metatron>, and <Zafkiel> have been the only Angels that he has physically manifested. Whenever tapping into the energy of the Angels, the color of his eyes changes from brown to gold. His initial Angel manifestations were accidental during times of desperation, but he later learn to intentionally summon them. In the Game Over Timeline, while Mio was reclaiming the Sephira Crystals, Shido could continue using the Angels even after their original owners were all killed by Mio. However, he would feel a brief disturbance with the Angel if it was deployed right when the original user died.

Besides sealing and summoning, whenever Shido manifests or uses the power of an Angel, his body is intoxicated with great physical pain. The Angels wielded by Spirits are not meant to be used by humans, which is why he overstresses his body when using his powers. The damage can be healed by <Camael>; however, Shido still feels the pain inflicted upon his body. During the battle to save Nia, his body remembered the feeling of controlling the Spirits' powers flowing inside of him. This memory caused him to be able to manifest numerous Angels willfully at the same time. However, the fatigue of using powers beyond human comprehension was still present, requiring him to use a combination of <Camael> and <Gabriel> to mitigate the pain and damage dealt to him. After sealing the powers of all ten Spirits, Shido no longer feels fatigued from using his powers.

Throughout the story, Shido has steadily progressed in his ability to utilize the powers that he has sealed. During early December, Shido lost control due to a disruption in the path of Reiryoku circulating throughout his body. The overload of Reiryoku and his fever caused him to enter an intoxicated high with lower inhibitions than his usual self. During this state, he was able to perform superhuman feats during his physical examination, despite feeling exhausted. Outsiders observed his behavior to be like an out-of-control Spirit. This state allowed him to use the powers of various Angels at once, seemingly without repercussions before his powers completely overheated. Afterwards, the memory of this experience also resulted in increased control over all of his sealed Spirit powers.

After the disappearance of Mio's Sephira Crystal, Shido subsequently lost the ability to use the powers of the Angels.

Sandalphon

Angel: Sandalphon (鏖殺公サンダルフォン, Sandarufon?. lit. "Massacre Ruler")

Weapon: Broadsword

Original owner: Tohka Yatogami

Shido first summoned <Sandalphon> when he was cursing his uselessness after Ellen defeated Tohka. During his first attempt, Shido's inexperience necessitated Tohka's physical support to swing a slash large enough to acquire Kaguya and Yuzuru's attention. He would intentionally summon it for the first time while trying to stop DEM's falling satellites. <Sandalphon> is a big broadsword with both close and long-range capabilities if used well by the wielder. In Shido's case, he cannot bring himself to use the sword at its maximum potential due to the pain it caused to his body. Unlike Tohka, Shido initially can barely swing it a few times before his body breaks down.

  • Final Sword: Halvanhelev (最後の剣ハルヴァンヘレヴ, Haruvanherevu?. lit. "Sword of the End") While receiving a boost from both Natsumi and Miku using <March>, Shido uses the final sword form of <Sandalphon> against Westcott during the war between Ratatoskr and DEM. It is determined by Shido and Westcott through <Beelzebub> to be the strongest attack in his arsenal at the time. However, the attack fails to be decisive, as Westcott had already researched the exact range of the attack beforehand.

Camael

Angel: Camael (灼爛殲鬼カマエル, Kamaeru?. lit. "Bright Burning Annihilating Demon")

Weapon: Halberd

Original owner: Kotori Itsuka

Shido has not wielded this Angel, but he has used its healing ability.

In Kotori's hands, the Angel takes the form of a halberd which slashes with tremendous force. One of its "sub-skills" is healing, which can be utilized by both Shido and Kotori. In Shido's case, it is an automatic "tool" that activates whenever Shido receives a fatal wound. Mio prioritized <Camael>'s sealing to ensure that Shido wouldn’t be killed so easily as Shinji. This ability is also useful for Shido because it heals the damage he sustains from using Angels as a human. However, the pain and fatigue from using other powers are still felt. Shido speculates that the ability will not activate for minor injuries within the scope of natural healing.[4] There is also a limit to how much the flames can heal if Shido's body had already been injured. Before Kurumi reset time to save him, Ellen was able to successfully kill Shido by decapitating him after the flames were already preoccupied with a fatal chest wound. [5] During his Reiryoku high, Shido displayed a greater level of skill in manipulating his flames, using them to light decorative ice candles.

Zadkiel

Angel: Zadkiel (氷結傀儡ザドキエル, Zadokieru?. lit. "Freezing Puppet")

Weapon: Puppet

Original owner: Yoshino Himekawa

Shido utilizes the power of <Zadkiel> by causing ice to manifest.

Shido first activated the powers of this Angel by creating a wall of ice to protect Miku from an attack made by Tohka in her Inverse state. During the battle against the monsters coming from Nia's <Beelzebub>, Shido consciously uses <Zadkiel> to freeze the monsters' legs to the ground. During the time when his powers went out of control, he was able to cause snowfall willingly and create beautiful candles and flowers made out of ice.

Haniel

Angel: Haniel (贋造魔女ハニエル, Hanieru?. lit. "Forgery Witch")

Weapon: Broom

Original owner: Natsumi Kyouno

Shido can use <Haniel>'s powers to transform both himself and his surroundings. When he traveled back to the past, he accidentally turned into his younger self to fool his neighbor. Shido did not know how to undo the transformation, but it was later dispelled by itself after a certain amount of time had passed. During the period when his powers went out of control, Shido displays great flexibility when using <Haniel>'s powers. When the sealed Spirits cornered him, he summoned the mirror to transform everyone around him (including himself) into Shiori to make a way for his escape. Later, during his dates, he used the power to dress himself up in a swimsuit and tuxedo.

  • Kaleidoscope (千変万化鏡カリドスクーぺ, Karidosukūpe?. lit. "Ever-changing Mirror"): During the conflict against Mukuro, Shido was able to manifest the broom and use the <Kaleidoscope> ability to create a copy of Mukuro's Angel <Michael> at will. With said duplicate, he battled against her and copied <Michael>'s unlock the ability to open the seal on Mukuro's heart. Mukuro later sealed <Haniel>'s ability to transform into <Michael>. However, Shido is still able to use <Haniel> for other purposes like creating the illusion of an uninjured body when he was later accidentally struck by Mukuro's attack.

Raphael

Angel: Raphael (颶風騎士ラファエル, Rafaeru?. lit. "Hurricane Knight")

Weapon: Combined Bow and Arrow

Original owners: Yamai Twins

<Raphael> grants Shido the power to control the wind. This wind is very powerful and has been used to blast away the enemies that were either standing in his way or ambushing him. When he lost control of his powers, Shido was able to use <Raphael> to manipulate the air currents, so that he could glide through the sky. Shido frequently uses <Raphael> for high-speed air movement, as it is the fastest Angel and he lacks the natural ability to fly like the Spirits. During the fight to save Nia, he consciously uses <Raphael> to blow away the monsters that were blocking his way. After successfully unlocking Mukuro's heart, Shido used <Raphael> in conjunction with <Zadkiel> to soften the impact of atmospheric reentry for both him and Mukuro.

When fighting against Westcott and <Nibelcole>, Shido heavily uses <Raphael> to control the winds and fly to avoid the countless clones attacking him. After sealing all ten Sephira Crystals, <Raphael>'s speed was enhanced to the extent where he could easily avoid <Ain Soph>'s roots and branches.

Gabriel

Angel: Gabriel (破軍歌姫ガブリエル, Gaburieru?. lit. "Army-Breaking Songstress")

Weapon: Organ

Original owner: Miku Izayoi

During the time when he lost control of his powers, Shido was able to use <Gabriel> to brainwash a crowd of people into serving as a distraction for him. As he was using multiple Angels at once, he uses Miku's <Requiem> as a pain reliever song for both himself and Nia.

  • March (行進曲マーチ, Māchi?. lit. "March"): Later on, <March> becomes his regular enhancement technique used to increase his physical abilities beyond that which is capable for a normal human being.
  • Requiem (鎮魂歌レクイエム, Rekuiemu?. lit. "Requiem"): A pain killer song that allows Shido to ignore the pain caused by wielding multiple Angels.

Metatron

Angel: Metatron (絶滅天使メタトロン, Metatoron?. lit. "Angel of Extinction")

Weapon: Crown

Original owner: Origami Tobiichi

Shido first used this Angel once just to dodge an incoming attack from Ellen. It is the same transporting skill Origami uses when she is about to get hit, dodging by transforming into light and teleporting somewhere else. However, the ability has a limited range.

During the war between Ratatoskr and DEM, Shido is seen using <Metatron>'s light as a long-distance projectile against the <Nibelcole>.

  • Mal'akh (天翼マルアク, Maruaku?. lit. "Heavenly Wings"): By taking on a wing-like formation and folding the pillars behind the back, Metatron allows for achieving great speeds in flight. Shido would use <Mal'akh> in conjunction with <Raphael> and <Zadkiel> during the battle against Westcott and <Nibelcole>.

Michael

Angel: Michael (封解主ミカエル, Mikaeru?. lit. "Seal-Removing Lord")

Weapon: Key

Original owner: Mukuro Hoshimiya

Even before sealing Mukuro, Shido had access to <Michael> by copying the Angel's power through <Haniel>. Although he momentarily lost this ability when Mukuro sealed it away with her own <Michael>, Shido regained the ability to use the Angel shortly after sealing Mukuro. He later utilizes this Angel in an attempt to unlock his past memories of Mio. However, he was not confident in accurately warping with its wormholes during Ratatoskr's war with DEM, due to its relatively recent sealing.

  • Lataib (ラータイブ?. lit. "Unlock"): Allows Shido to unlock objects and concepts previously sealed with <Michael>. Shido first used this technique with a copy of <Michael> produced by <Haniel> in order to open the seal placed on Mukuro's heart.
  • Tefetē (小鍵テフェテー?. lit. "Small Key"): Shrinks <Michael> down to a miniature version small enough to be held at the palm of his hand. Shido uses this form of <Michael> in order to more easily point the angel at his own head when attempting to unlock his past memories.
  • Segva (セグヴァ, Seguva?. lit. "Lock"): Seals away the target pointed at by the key. Shido first used it in order to lock Westcott's ability to use <Beelzebub> after he was defeated.

Zafkiel

Angel: Zafkiel (刻々帝ザフキエル, Zafukieru?. lit. "Time Emperor")

Weapon: Clock, Flintlock Pistol, Musket

Original owner: Kurumi Tokisaki

Before her actual sealing, Kurumi had unintentionally given Shido her Sixth Bullet Vav after giving him a thank-you kiss for saving her from Kotori. While using <Zafkiel>, Shido's left eye takes on Kurumi's distinctive golden-clock pattern.

  • Sixth Bullet Vav (六の弾ヴァヴ, Vavu?): Sends the consciousness of its target into the body of a past version of themselves. However, unlike the Twelfth Bullet, the user is only able to travel back to a few days at maximum regardless of how much time is used. Shido later uses the bullet to escape from Mio and return back to the day before Ratatoskr and DEM's final battle.
  • Ninth Bullet Tet (九の弾テット, Tetto?): Allows Shido the ability to connect senses with someone on a different time axis. In the Mukuro True Route Timeline, Shido fires this bullet along with the Twelfth Bullet to Mukuro. This allows Shido to experience what Mukuro felt while she was in the past. However, due to his near-death state, he wasn't able to communicate back with her. Nevertheless, this link formed a waypoint that allows Mukuro to return to the present rather than having her existence annihilated like Kurumi had theorized.
  • Tenth Bullet Yud (十の弾ユッド, Yuddo?): Allows Shido to observe the past of whatever person or object the bullet pierces. Shido is instructed by Kurumi to use it on himself to regain his altered memory of Tohka (actually Tenka) taking Mio's Sephira Crystal.
  • Twelfth Bullet Yud Bet (十二の弾ユッド・ベート, Yuddo Betto?) Allows Shido to send the target of the bullet to the past. Shido uses this bullet in the Mukuro True Route Timeline to send Mukuro back to the past. Due to the sheer amount of Reiryoku Shido gathered, Mukuro is able to stay in the past for over a year. However, Mukuro offering her Reiryoku to Shido in the new timeline to save Origami caused an unintentional side-effect of Mukuro's body cracking and breaking down before she returns to her proper timeline.

Rasiel

Angel: Rasiel (囁告篇帙ラジエル, Rajieru?. lit. "Tome of Revelation")

Weapon: Book

Original owner: Nia Honjo & Kurumi Tokisaki

Due to Westcott stealing the vast majority of Nia's Sephira Crystal beforehand, Shido lacked the ability to use Rasiel even after sealing Nia. However, he later gains the power of this Angel properly after Kurumi steals back Nia's Sephira and allows Shido to seal her. Indirectly, Shido channeled upon Rasiel's power along with the other nine Angels in order to land a devastating punch onto Westcott, who had since become the Second Spirit of Origin.

While in Tenka's world, Shido had the option of using Rasiel to regain his true memories of what transpired after Mio died. However, Kurumi advised him to use Zafkiel to perform this function instead. As a result, Rasiel to this day remains the only Angel in his arsenal that Shido has never directly made use of its power.

Mio's Angels

Despite never truly sealing Mio prior to her death, Shido found himself capable of using her Angels within Tenka's artificial world after seemingly receiving encouragement from the departed First Spirit.

Angel: Ain Soph Aur (万象聖堂 アイン・ソフ・オウル, Ain sofu ōru?. lit. "Sanctuary of All Things In Creation")

Weapon: Flower

Original owner: Mio Takamiya

A flower that contains a silhouette of Mayuri at the center of the petals. Following the command to bloom, the flower constantly emits particles of light that instantly kill everyone that comes in contact with it, except for those protected by an Astral Dress or a strong enough <Territory>. This Angel was first used to help Tohka against her fight with the huge Mio copy produced from the immune system from Mio's Sephira Crystal. The pollen from the flower was used to disable the huge Mio's arms.

Angel: Ain Soph (輪廻楽園 アイン・ソフ, Ain sofu?. lit. "Samsara of Paradise"):

Weapon: Tree

Original owner: Mio Takamiya

A towering tree with a statue of Rio Sonogami embedded in the trunk. It is decorated with flowers and branches that pierce the sky and reshape the surrounding landscape, giving it a monochrome, chessboard-like appearance. Within this area of effect, Shido can freely manipulate the laws of reality. He primarily used this Angel's roots to restrain the huge Mio copy.

Angel: Ain ( アイン, Ain?)

Weapon: Seed

Original owner: Mio Takamiya

An Angel of the void that lacks a physical form. It instantly illuminates the entire world with light before erasing whomever or whatever Shido desires from reality. This was first used to erase the enormous Mio copy, leaving behind only its core intact.

Demon King

Demon King: Nahemah (暴虐公ナヘマー, Nahemā?. lit. "Tyrant Ruler")

Original owner: Tohka Yatogami (Parallel World)

To follow <Beast> after she escapes to her parallel world, Shido uses the tenth sword that she left behind, which turns out to be Tenka's Nahemah. His first experience with wielding a Demon King threatened to collapse his mind, but Tenka's will within the sword guided him to cut open a portal to the parallel world.

Original Techniques

While intoxicated with Reiryoku, Shido was able to create his own original attack, Secret Art: Roaring Flash Blast Wave! (奥義瞬閃轟爆破, Ougi Shunsengoubakuha?), a technique named by himself back in his middle school years. The blast released from his hands was enough to completely destroy the Bandersnatch units sent to attack him. He defeats Westcott with this technique in the Game Over Timeline, predicting that Westcott had only used Beelzebub to learn about his Angels' attacks. This technique is comparable to the energy beams released from Tohka’s <Sandalphon> and Origami’s <Metatron>. After sealing all ten Angels, he was able to channel their power into his fist to throw a shock wave-inducing punch that defeated Westcott, who had become the Second Spirit of Origin.

Miscellaneous Skills

Shido is a very skilled cook who regularly makes meals for several Spirits. His cooking was even favored by Mio and Reine over Shinji's, despite their preference toward his previous incarnation. He also retains skills from his chuunibyou phase, such as playing guitar for the music competition with Miku and drawing for the manga sales competition with Nia.
