Ellen Mira Mathers (エレン・ミラ・メイザース, Eren Mira Meizāsu?) is the secondary antagonist of the Date A Live series who is first introduced in Volume 5 alongside Sir Isaac Ray Pelham Westcott.

Summary[]

Dubbed as "The World's Strongest Wizard," she was also the secretary of DEM's director Sir Isaac Ray Pelham Westcott, one of the company's chief executives. She is also the older sister of Karen Nora Mathers. After Westcott's death, she lost her memories involving him and DEM Industries and later became a teacher at Raizen High School.

Appearance[]

Ellen is a beautiful, deceptively young-looking woman with light Nordic blonde hair, purple eyes, pale skin, and a slender body. She normally wears a black suit, but manifests a platinum Wiring Suit and CR-Unit in battle. Ellen's height is stated to be 160 cm, and her three sizes are B86/W60/H87.

Personality[]

Ellen is usually calm and analytic, especially when around Westcott. However, during battle, her true personality is revealed. Ellen is actually very battle-hungry, as shown when she chooses to fight Tohka directly instead of just capturing her and later states her disappointment when she easily defeats her in her Limited Release Astral Dress. Ellen also dislikes teaming up against a single opponent, viewing it as something the weak would do to win. She also doesn't seem to care about weaklings, quickly losing interest in Tohka after she defeated her during their first battle, and not caring about her own comrades because they couldn't keep up with her. However, Ellen is able to acknowledge and praise others for their ability. Also, she doesn't seem to allow her battle-loving nature to control herself too much, often prioritizing her job first when necessary.

Ellen is very prideful about her status as "The World's Strongest Wizard". According to Westcott, Ellen made a vow to never lose to any opponent, even if it is an atrocity that kills the world. She appears to be completely convinced of her own invincibility, claiming no one in the world can defeat her and claiming without a doubt that if she weren't wounded she would have won against Tohka in her Inverse Form. She also believes that she has no faults, seemingly unaware of the fact that without a Realizer she is in fact very clumsy and physically weak, as stated by Mana. She also has a huge ego that twists some things so it will make her seem strong, claiming she defeated Nia while in fact she only caught her off guard through a sneak attack. Ellen seems unwilling to accept her losses, after her first attempt to abduct Tohka failed, while accepting full responsibility for it in front of Westcott, she internally blamed James A. Paddington and the students of Raizen High School for the blunder. Ellen also felt humiliated when Shido, controlled by all the Reiryoku in his body, condescendingly flirted with her while easily resisting her Territory, causing her to swear vengeance. Ellen also has a habit of continuously stating her title to others.

Despite all of this, Ellen has also shown the qualities of a typical girl. While normally calm, when annoyed she is quick to get angry over even very small things. She can also get embarrassed, as seen when Westcott teases her. Also, when confronted by an out-of-character Shido who tried to flirt with her, she became shocked and embarrassed to the point of trying to use her Territory to separate him from her.

One year after the final battle against DEM, Ellen has lost her memories of everything involving DEM and Westcott. Consequently, Ellen's new dominant personality is much more meek and easily prone to embarrassment from just being stared at. She is also susceptible to headaches whenever she hears the word "strongest" now.

History[]

Background[]

Ellen grew up in a village of Magus, along with her younger sister, Karen and friends, Westcott and Woodman. However, one day a group of humans who feared the power of magic burned down their village. Ellen, Karen, Westcott, and Woodman survived and watched their village burn from a distance. Seeing the destruction of her home caused Ellen to cry, with Karen trying to comfort her. Afterward, Ellen supported Westcott's newfound desire to create a new world, one with only mages living in it. Westcott, Woodman, and Ellen spent their youths learning everything they could about sorcery in order to find a method to create a Spirit, a being of immense power born from the mana of the world, which they could use to achieve their goal. After Westcott founded Deus Ex Machina Industries, Ellen became his secretary. Because of her unequaled strength among <Wizards>, Ellen eventually also earned the title of "The World's Strongest Wizard", something she takes great pride in.

Around 30 years ago, Ellen and Woodman were by Westcott's side as he set his plan for a new world into motion. Using a sorcery called <Spirit Formula>, they gathered all of the world's mana in a single location and successfully created a Spirit, alongside an alternate dimension in the process. This act also triggered the first Spacequake, which destroyed a large portion of the Eurasian continent. However, Ellen, Westcott, and Woodman survived by protecting themselves with a talisman barrier made from using sorcery.

At some point, the Spirit managed to escape from DEM and ended up causing smaller Spacequakes around the world for six months before suddenly disappearing. DEM eventually found the Spirit, now going by the name Mio Takamiya, living with Shinji Takamiya and Mana Takamiya. In response to this, DEM abducted Mana to use her as leverage in exchange for Mio. However, Mio managed to escape. At some point after this, Woodman left DEM and formed Ratatoskr to stop Westcott from achieving his goal of a mage-only world. Ellen saw this as an unforgivable betrayal, causing her to develop a grudge against Woodman. She is also currently not on good terms with Karen, as she left with Woodman and joined Ratatoskr.

After DEM discovered the existence of Nia, Ellen was sent to capture her alive. She was able to do so by catching her off guard through a sneak attack. She and Westcott then put her through horrible physical torture in an attempt to make her transform into her Inverse Form. However, no matter what they tried, she never transformed.

Powers and Abilities[]

Wizard[]

Living up to her title as "The World's Strongest Wizard," Ellen can easily defeat a Spirit with a Limited Astral Dress. She was also able to fight on par with Tohka in her Inverse Form, although she was never able to inflict a serious injury or get the upper hand on her. Nevertheless, she also went into the fight while wounded at the time. Ellen is one of the few Wizards that can use her Territory without a CR-Unit. However, this takes her a lot of concentration. Even without her CR-Unit, she can use a miniature version of her laser blade to slice off the hands of the rebellious DEM board members. Her Territory was notably able to protect herself and Westcott from the brainwashing effect of Miku's <Solo>, which otherwise requires significant Reiryoku. She is also the only person shown to be able to maintain her fighting ability while under Natsumi's transformation. She is also one of the few remaining pure Magus, performing the Spirit Formula alongside Westcott and Elliot to create the First Spirit.

However, it should be noted that all the Spirits that Ellen fought never went all out against her because they were either sealed by Shido, underestimated her, or had been caught off guard. Also, without a Realizer, she is in fact very clumsy and physically weak. During their childhood, Elliot would also tease Ellen for her lack of talent compared to her younger sister. Nevertheless, during the aftermath of their battle, Elliot would admit that Ellen had surpassed him by being able to safely use her power without going beyond her limits.

After Ellen lost her memories and joined Ratatoskr, Origami proposed they install a transmitter as a failsafe that would cut off Ellen's Realizer should her hostility ever resurface. [2] When the threat of Beast emerges, Ellen is brought up as the strongest person in Ratatoskr now that Spirit powers have disappeared for over a year. However, Kotori also considered the possibility that her skill with the Realizer has significantly diminished after suffering from memory loss. [3]

Equipment & Weapons:[]

  • Combat Realizer Unit (CR-Unit)
    • <Pendragon> (ペンドラゴン, Pendoragon?): Ellen's personal CR-Unit, which is made distinct by its platinum hue and the large Territory she can generate with her mind.
      • <Caledfwlch> (カレドヴルフ, Karedovurufu?): A large laser blade used by Ellen. The blade is entirely composed of Maryoku, making it stronger than Mana's Maryoku-coated <Wolftail> in exchange for a higher consumption rate.
      • <Rhongomiant> (ロンゴミアント, Rongomianto?): Attached to the back of <Pendragon>, it can transform into a spear that can also be used as a cannon.
      • <Chastiefol> (シャスティフォル, Shasutiforu?): A magic missile that has razor edges installed at the back of the CR unit. It is capable of unleashing a barrage of torrential energy capable of killing an averagely skilled Wizard.
  • Airship
    • <Goetia> (ゲーティア, Gētia?): Ellen's personal warship, which she commands by herself through a network of electronic devices and wires. It boasts considerable firepower, but its true trump card lies in its locomotive dexterity due to the ship having its Territory connected to Ellen. It is essentially a massive CR-Unit, though the mental burden of controlling such a large vehicle means that even Ellen cannot use it for very long. It was able to easily defeat Fraxinus in the previous world; however, it suffered considerable damage when faced against the upgraded Fraxinus EX. During the final battle, <Goetia> was repaired and used as part of the ritual to turn Westcott into the Second Spirit of Origin.

Quotes[]

  • (To Sir Isaac Ray Pelham Westcott) “That is a given. No matter who the opponent is, I will never lose.” [4]
  • (To Kotori Itsuka) “───Elliot. Elliot. You betrayer. You who betrayed our vow. Please prepare yourself. No matter where you hide, I will definitely find you and I will cut off that head of yours” [5]
  • (To Fraxinus crew) "Those who dare challenge heaven will have their wings plucked—and shall be scorched by the holy flame like that fool Icarus" [6]
  • (To Elliot Baldwin Woodman) “──Why didn’t you take me with you, Elliot──”[7]

Trivia[]

  • Ellen's favorite dessert is strawberry shortcake.[8]
  • She is rumored amongst DEM to be Westcott's mistress.[9]
  • Ellen's last name is a reference to Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, one of the founders of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, which was one of the orders of the Hermetic Qabalah.
  • Ellen’s personal warship <Goetia> is named after the Ars Goetia, part of the grimoire Lesser Key of Solomon that was translated by Mathers.
  • The naming theme for Ellen's CR-Unit equipment takes inspiration from Arthurian legend:
    • Pendragon is the epithet of King Arthur and his father.
    • Caledfwlch is the Welsh name of Arthur's sword Excalibur.
    • Chastiefol was Arthur's sword in the medieval French story, "Le Chevalier au Papegau".
    • Rhongomiant was the name of a spear wielded by Arthur.
    • Ellen's kickboard Prydwen (プリドゥエン, Puriduen?), which she needs to swim[8], is named after King Arthur's ship.
  • Ellen loves the concept of being the strongest and hates the concept of being the weakest.[10]
